Google or Wikipedia 'Pop Art'. Oldenburg was active at a time when there was an explosion of mass produced 'stuff'', displayed in the new superstores, advertised repeatedly in the ever expanding new media. It was the time that 'popular culture' was born. The Pop Artists, influenced by Andy Warhol, celebrated and commented upon this new popular culture, using the subjects, motifs and methods of mass production and representing the objects of popular culture.
Look at some other of Oldenburg's food sculptures - such as the 'soft' Hamburger, Popsicle, Price, made from fabric. Look at how other artists used the foods and drinks that represented popular culture, such as Andy Warhol's coke bottles or Roy Lichenstein's Chop. Look at how other artists used store-like displays e.g. Wayne Thiebaud Refridgerator Pies.
