How can I easily build a shogi board?

That's shogi, or Japanese chess. I have a friend who's been wanting to have one for quite some time. It's practically impossible to get one outside of Japan (only 4 on ebay, none of them made of wood), and in my country (Argentina) it's literally impossible.
So, I want to "build" one for him, as a Christmas present. I'll probably make the pieces out of ceramic, so the big deal is the board. Question is, how can I easily make one? I imagine I can get a piece of wood of the appropriate size, but I'd still have to work on it, paint it, and maybe add something for the edges. What's the best way to do that, and what advices can you give me? Thanks in advance.
