White Washed Custom

How do I use paint to create a custom stain for wood?
I want a white-washed effect with a little blue or maybe a little green tone in it, and can't find anything at my local hardware that fits my intent. We live way out in the sticks so I'm going to need to improvise because I can't just run over to the specialty paint store...there isn't one in the entire county.
I have heard of using ordinary latex paint with water as a stain. I want the wood grain to show some, but wish to lighten the overall effect for a light, airy, clean feel with a natural touch. What should I watch out for, what steps should I make for preparing the wood...any ideas that you would use if you were doing my project.
Thanks
KRS
Hi Karen,
The effect that you are looking for is called "pickeling". First thing tou want to do is sand the surface lightly, if the wood is bare, which by your description is unknown. If so, then find the color you like in a latex, and make a 3-1 mixture of paint and water, water being the latter of course. Apply the paint and then wipe off with a clean rag, The paint will soak into the grain of the wood and a film on the surface and give you the desired effect. Then for protection, after the paint has dried apply a coat of a latex clear polyurethane. With the info you provided, I think this what you are looking for.
