William King
When Prince William marries, and when he eventually becomes King, will his wife be Queen?
The whole British monarchy confuses me a little.
I know after Queen Elizabeth II dies, Prince Charles will become King Charles, and when he dies, Prince William will become His Majesty King William. But will his wife be Her Majesty the Queen? How does that work?
I'm trying to understand before school starts, Britain's monarchy is part of the curriculum

Elizabeth is a monarch, or a sovereign, or the head of state. Her husband is a consort (or a person of no power of his own).

Properly, it would be correct to say "Elizabeth, The Queen" to emphasize that she is the ruler, however, most people say "Queen Elizabeth" which is still correct.

If William gets married he will be made into a Duke before his marriage. I don't know which Duke, but I am guessing he will be the Duke of Clarence. His wife will be "Duchess of Clarence" until he becomes king. The she will be known as "Queen Katherine" but NEVER "Katherine, The Queen". Unlike Elizabeth Katherine will be a consort, and not a monarch.

If Katherine outlives William, and their son is ruling, then Katherine will be a queen mother. Normally, the "mother" is understood, but it was formally added to the style of Elizabeth's mother. That is because The Queen and her mother had the same first name, and it would be confusing.

Camilla is the first time i history that the King has had a second legal wife (and not a mistress). To make the situation more complex, Diana retained the title of "Princess of Wales" even after her divorce. Camilla is choosing to use a secondary title "Duchess of Gloucester" for now, and the style "Princess Consort" instead of "Queen Consort" when Charles becomes king. Since it could be 20 years yet, she may change her mind about this decision.

If Camilla outlives Charles, then she will be a dowager queen. However in recent decades women do not like to be known by the style "dowager".She can't go back to "Duchess of Gloucester" since that title will belong to William's wife."Dowager Princess" is ridiculous sounding. Perhaps at that point William will encourage her to use the style "Queen Camilla" since people may want her to have a reasonable title.
