My dog was hit by a car this morning and has suffered a shattered back leg.?

I have a 7 mos. old border collie, wire hair fox terrier mix puppy. We live in the country on a dead end drive and she's a country dog that loves chasing birds, swimming in the ponds and romping with my kids. She likes to follow us when we leave for work but turns back toward home about halfway. This morning she followed me all the way to the highway and was struck by a car. The car didn't even slow down, just kept going. I immediately drove her to the vet's. I have found out that her back leg is completely shattered and my options are to have the leg amputated or have surgery and have it reconstructed with pins. This cost of the surgery is a little under $1k. I have three children, my husband and I both work full time and we live from paycheck to paycheck, barely making ends meet as it is. There is no possible way for me to afford this so now I must choose between the surgery or having her put down. I simply don't know what to do. Anybody been in the same situation?

My Aussie had her back leg (femor) shattered in 7 places when someone ran over her in my driveway! The vet gave me 3 options initially: keep her totally confined in a crate for 8 wks to try to see how well the leg would heal on its own, surgery with pins, or euthanize her. Like you, I couldn't afford the surgery so we chose to keep her confined. After the 8 wks, the vet was to examine her again and determine if the leg healed sufficiently or would need to be amputated. It was a very long two months and we ended up having to treat her for a massive abcess that blew out on the "good" hip during this time. The broken leg did heal sufficiently enough to keep the leg. She still, and always will, walk with a limp but she does have some function of the leg (can scratch with it, uses it to balance when climbing stairs) but generally holds it up when she runs. She is a very happy girl and the vet is really surprised she did as well as she did.

Hope your baby does well too!
